Noah’s Big Boat

God asked Noah to build a great big boat, and He kept Noah, his family, and the animals aboard safe and sound. It is a story about listening, trusting, and a beautiful promise in the sky.

Long ago, people everywhere were doing wrong, and it made God very sad. But Noah loved God with all his heart, and he always listened when God spoke. One quiet day, God said softly, “Noah, build a great big boat called an ark.” God told him, “I am sending a flood, but I will keep you and your family safe.” Noah listened closely and nodded, ready to do just what God asked.

Right away, Noah got to work, just as God had said. He measured and sawed, and his hammer went tap, tap, tap all day long. The sawdust floated in the warm air as plank after wooden plank went up. Slowly the ark grew tall and wide — it was very, very big!

Then, two by two, the animals came walking to the ark. Noah brought male and female animals, just as God had told him. For the animals God called clean, and for birds, he brought seven pairs; for the other animals, one pair. Noah and his family brought food for everyone aboard. At last, all the animals God had sent were safely inside.

When everyone was in, Noah and his family settled down, and God Himself shut the big door tight. Soft and gentle, the rain began to fall, pitter-patter on the roof. It rained for forty days and forty nights! The water rose higher and higher, but the ark floated calmly upon it. Inside, everyone was warm and dry and snug, held safe in God’s care.

At last the rain stopped falling, and much later the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. The water still needed time to go down. Noah sent out a raven, and then a dove. The dove first returned because it had nowhere to rest. A week later it brought back a fresh olive leaf. Noah waited again until the ground was dry and God told his family to leave the ark. Then the people and animals stepped outside.

Then God placed a beautiful rainbow high across the sky. Red and orange, yellow and green, blue and purple — it shimmered like a promise. God said, “Never again will a flood cover the whole earth. That is My promise to you.” Noah looked up and smiled, his heart full of thanks. And God always keeps His promise — He always, always does.

Thank You, God, for keeping Noah, his family, and the animals aboard the ark safe and warm. Thank You for the beautiful rainbow that reminds us You always keep Your promises.
