The Good Shepherd’s Song

A gentle song about how God, our Good Shepherd, watches over us with love — just the way a shepherd cares for every soft little lamb.

Long ago, out on the green hills, a boy named David watched over his woolly sheep. He knew each soft little lamb by name, and he loved every one of them. He kept them safe all day under the warm sun and all night under the twinkling stars. David knew the work of a shepherd. In the song we call Psalm 23, he described God’s loving care using the picture of a shepherd and sheep.

“The Lord is my shepherd,” David sang softly. “He gives me all that I need.” As the words floated over the hills, David smiled, for he understood something wonderful. God is like a kind and gentle shepherd. And we are like His own dear little lambs, safe in His care.

The Good Shepherd leads His lambs to soft green grass, sweet and cool beneath their feet. He brings them to quiet pools of still water for a long, happy drink. There the lambs can lie down in the warm sun and rest. With the Shepherd near, their little hearts feel calm and peaceful.

Sometimes the path winds through dark and shadowy places where it is hard to see. But the little lamb is not afraid, not even one bit. The Shepherd walks right beside him, close enough to touch, the whole way through. In his hand he carries a strong wooden staff to keep every lamb safe and sound.

“God’s love and kindness will follow me every single day,” sang David, his voice glad and sure. Wherever he went, the Shepherd’s goodness was always close behind, like a warm and gentle friend. “And I will live in the house of the Lord forever,” he sang, knowing the Good Shepherd would never, ever leave him alone.

And just like that little lamb on the hillside, you are deeply loved too. God your Good Shepherd is always near, watching over you with all His heart. When the day is bright and when the night is dark, He is right there beside you. You can close your eyes and rest, knowing His loving presence is near.

Thank You, God, for being my Good Shepherd who stays close and guides me with love. Help me to rest quietly in Your love today, knowing You are always near.
